diwali fun – october 16th & 17th
imagine christma-kkah in nyc only you’re in india & it’s october, & there is no santa or hanukkah harry. ok, so they aren’t totally alike, but diwali – like christmas/hanukkah to many americans – is the favorite holiday of indians & their south asian neighbors.
this festival of lights celebrates the ancient tale of king rama & queen sita’s coronation after 14 years of exile when the royal families of ayodha lit up their kingdoms in honor of their homecoming. diwali, which literally means “a row of lamps,” has become a yearly five-day merriment when ier'endians illuminate their homes with small oil diyas (little lamps for good luck). friends &family visit one another to share sweets & joy.
